Government Releases Consultation to Protect Crowded Areas against Terrorism
Wednesday 6 May 2009 @ 10:27 am

A public consultation to prevent terrorism, containing inputs for the local authorities, businesses, the police and communities, to enable them to work together, has been published by the Security Ministry. The focus of the consultation is on the terrorism threat faced by crowded areas.

Security Minister, Lord West, has also declared that an extra amount of £5m would now be provided for security measures against terrorism in public places. This declaration was made in response to the increasing number of incidents involving attacks on public areas and crowded places throughout the world. A review of security in such places showed that though a lot has already been done to improve it, much remains to be done for the new security system to be effectively implemented.

The consultation document has been released with the intention to help the people understand their responsibility in reducing the risks of attacks to susceptible areas like pubs, shopping centres, schools, clubs, and sports arenas. In this endeavour, Counter Terrorism Security Advisers (CTSAs) from the police will provide guidance to different bodies to prioritise work according to an assessment of security threats at crowded places across the country.

He said that the police and Government alone cannot succeed in achieving the objective of public safety. A contribution from the local authorities and the public will go a long way in reaching this goal. Businesses can also help a great deal in the implementation of anti-terrorism measures.

Lord West also said that an advice program would soon be launched for the planners involved in the design of vulnerable public places, so that major risks can be addressed in the initial stage itself.
