Choose PSP over iPod?
Tuesday 28 October 2008 @ 8:17 pm

We all love to have fun. Let’s enter the world of fun. These days when you go to the store there is a huge variety of portable devices that have similar functions. However they do differ in design, colour, weight and functions to some extent. I chose the 2 devices that are very similar in functions PSP and iPod. For those of you who do not know PSP stands for play station portable. For both of them you can listen to music, look at pictures and watch video. Well for iPod the videos need to be musical clips, whereas PSP supports all the movies such as the “Ring”. The one big difference is PSP supports games and is able to accept special disks. PSP has built in speakers that allow you not to use headphones, but for iPod you have to go and get standing speakers. PSP is larger and heavier that iPod , but it does have a larger screen and game controller. Though i must admit it is pretty slim and fits in most inside jacket pockets. PSPs like iPods come with different cases to protect surfaces. Now lets talk about the iPod, well there is a whole family of them shuffle the smallest one, iPod nano and that just iPod. Let’s concentrate on the latest version since it has a video function. It is very slim and fits about any where from suitcase to a shirt pocket. They come with leather or rubber cases. The iPod has a very delicate surfaces and required to be in a case 24/7. The iPod has a remote in a shape of a bagel that can be used with one thumb to stop, pause, play, go to menu and even change volume. You will be able to experience music videos, listen to a variety of music that you can download and than upload to your iPod. You can always create play list on the go and enjoy looking at pictures of your friends while traveling to your destination. Let me track back to PSP the game experience is unforgettable. The minute you get on to the subway or train and turn on your PSP you enter a world of action and fun. The headphones allow you to experience the sound for every action. Like they say in physics for every action there is a reaction. Do not take me wrong i am not trying to persuade you for either PSP or iPod. I mean it very much depends if you love games and watching movie or just music and looking at pictures. I personally love the game experience, because it kills time during the travel, i would personally go for the more functional one. Ok now i am going to leave you to decide which device fits your personality.

Midwest Patterns Goes Live Month Early with Encompix ERP Software
Tuesday 28 October 2008 @ 5:03 am

Midwest Patterns, Inc., Quincy, Illinois, completed their implementation of Encompix at the beginning of December 2005. “The Encompix consultants were a joy to work with,” said Rob Stull, project manager. “They really know their stuff and were able to help us apply the Encompix software effectively to our business. They all worked very hard to ensure that the ‘go-live’ went smoothly and helped us keep the project on track and on budget.”

Midwest Patterns completed the implementation a full month earlier than they originally planned. Encompix (www.encompix.com) has filled the manufacturing software requirements of Engineer-to-Order companies since 1992. The company name reflects the commitment to developing business application solutions that encompass the complex areas of project-based and job-based manufacturing. Encompix provides ETO manufacturers with a competitive advantage by improving bottom line results.

According to Thomas R. Cutler, spokesperson for the ETO Institute (www.etoinstitute.org), “Encompix continues to capture significant marketshare in the ETO environment because few other ERP vendors truly understand the nuances and significant distinctions of the ETO process versus the repetitive manufacturing process. How to Build a Mechanical Bullet Which Turns
Monday 27 October 2008 @ 2:37 pm

A Mechanical bullet, which will turn in flight is well within our technical capabilities. The premise is to have a bullet, which is preset to turn a corner can be achieved thru a small gear setting on the bullet or a preset finger on the barrel or in the chamber which can be dialed in prior to discharge. Picture a bullet and shell, directly above the shell on near the bottom of the bullet would be a small gear, which could be turned with your finger nail, each gear indentation would be equivalent to approximately 10 yards, written on the bullet shell would be a scale embossed, stamped or laser printed. The soldier would estimate from his night vision goggles, weapon sight or head gear the distance from his position where the turn needed to occur so the bullet would turn.

The bullet would zoom along and as it did the ram air in front of the bullet would take in a little of the relative wind created from it’s flight forward. There is to be small tiny holes around the front of the bullets head, when the ram air goes thru those holes it will move that gear back a little at a time, as the ram air progresses in the steady stream it will move the gear a click, at a time, until it is back to center and at that point the gear would dislodge and move towards the side of the intended turn. It would stay there for a second, or the time it takes for the bullet to make a 90-degree turn. At which point it’s planned obsolescence would occur and the part would fail and fall off. The bullet would then continue on it’s new trajectory.

The spin of the bullet and Magnus Effect would stop as soon as the gear moved outward causing severe drag. The trajectory would then be altered and the static stability factor in temporary chaos as the bullet begins to yaw and skid as it starts it’s turn. Once the backing and gear fell at the prescribed time due to the forces on it, the bullet would wobble and the oscillations slow and the new trajectory would then become stable as the bullets center of gravity’s direction, direction of the cone and the trajectory all become the same once again.

The bullet would slow and lose approximately 20% of its velocity due to the turn, induced drag of the skid as more of the bullet would pushing on the relative wind, however this fact will also allow the trajectory to re-stabilize. The parasite drag would also slow the bullet from the gear protruding in flight for that second, but once discharged after the turn, it would mimic the characteristics of a two-stage rocket, and it would be free from the extra weight and drag. The aerodynamics of the turn on the bullet itself might be more akin to that of a small SAM missile.

The holes in the front of the bullet will either come thru the front perhaps around the cavity surrounding the hollow tip punch in the center. This idea has great applications for the A-10 for the nose gun where those bullets, which miss the first targets of a convoy end up turning into the additional targets in the line of the convoy. So the pilot might favor a parallel approach slightly off center and the bullets would act like a Major League curve ball on every forth round or so? If vehicles broke ranks and tried to flea or enemy soldiers on foot attempted to run, they could not escape as the bullets would be moving in those directions also. If every forth bullet turned right and every eighth bullet turned left, you might find your runs had higher first pass kill rates. Such a technique will also work good for Apache Attack Helicopters, the fewer passes you have to make the better. In air-to-air combat those seemingly stray bullets would help get the evasive fighter jet.

If you are a special forces team entering an urban area for combat and your aerial vision from a loitering UAV, close air support or downloaded Satellite imagery shows bad guy threats around the next corner. Then a calibration devices on the barrel of a machine gun could be set to lay fire around the corner where enemy combatants have staged themselves for an ambush or just to clear the street from combatants before you round the corner.

What’s up with a Plasma TV?
Saturday 25 October 2008 @ 3:30 am

What’s up with a Plasma TV?

Plasma TV has brought television watching to a whole new level of quality entertainment. Screens can be wider on plasma TV’s than on conventional televisions, without taking up nearly as much space. A plasma TV is typically only 6 inches deep. Rooms that would have been too small to hold a big screen TV before can easily do so now. Because the screen is flat the picture can be seen from different angles and from practically any part of the room. The pictures are smoother and clearer. Thousands of pixel cells are infused with an extraordinary range of color intensities, which combine to make a picture incredibly life-like. After trying a new plasma TV, you’ll never want to go back to regular television again.

The technology behind the creation of the plasma TV has to do with gases and electrons. Generally, gases are made up of balanced particles, with equal numbers of positive charged protons and negative charged electrons. When free electrons are introduced to the gas, they collide with the particles and knock loose other electrons, causing photons of energy to be released.

A phosphor surface on the interior of the plasma TV gives off light when it is stimulated by the electrons, resulting in the image seen on the screen. While plasma TV’s aren’t cheap, the prices have come down these last couple of years, making them affordable to more people.

Transducers – The Remarkable Changers
Friday 24 October 2008 @ 8:53 pm

Complex control systems all make use of signals that can be
easily measured and altered remotely. Automatically operated
machines or actuators need to be powered either by electrical
motors, pneumatic or hydraulic cylinders.

The most common signals sent out from a transducer are
electrical current or voltage and pneumatic pressure. These
signals are easily translated by controllers. Visual measuring
devices like liquid bulb thermometers are not able to be used
in automatic control systems because there are no electrical
or pneumatic signals.

However, when some other component is added to it to enable it
to give a corresponding signal, then the measuring unit becomes
a transducer.

A transducer is a device to convert a signal (representing a
physical quantity) of one form into a corresponding signal of
another form, retaining the amplitude variations of energy
being converted.

Just as an example, a microphone is a sound transducer (acoustic
to electrical) and a loudspeaker is an electrical transducer
(electrical to acoustic). A transducer may be an integral part
of the measuring unit, for example pressure to displacement in
a Bourdon pressure gauge. It may also be a separate unit
converter especially suitable to change the signal to a better
form for remote transmission, e.g. displacement to electrical
in a differential transformer.

How do these transducers work?

To convert physical movement to electrical signals, some devices
make use of variable resistors. Any movement will cause a slider
contact to change position against a resistance wire causing a
change in electrical current or voltage. Other devices may make
use of the movement to alter the position of an induction coil
relative to the magnetic core, causing a change in the induced
current in the circuit. Others may make use of the movement to
change the air gap between two capacitance plates, causing a
change in the current in the circuit.

In the case of the loudspeaker, the opposite effect takes place.
Electrical signals are converted to movement.

Some pneumatic transducers make use of changing air signals to
cause a corresponding mechanical movement in the flapper and
linkages. This movement is then converted to electrical signals
by the methods above. So it takes 3 steps of conversion before
we can get the electrical signal.

Once the electrical signal is obtained, it can be used to compare
to the set value in the controller, and a whole control system can
be designed from it.

Well folks, get your signals and be in control!

Ten Steps to Fearless Public Speaking
Thursday 23 October 2008 @ 7:22 pm

There is plenty of dubious material which suggests you can combat public speaking fear. Much of it includes fancy techniques such as ‘visualisation’ or ‘breathing techniques’. Well, they might work. But this ten step system is GUARANTEED TO WORK. That’s because instead of fancy tricks and techniques, this system of dealing with public speaking fear uses your body’s natural defences against fear.

STEP ONE
Prepare well. Naturally enough, the more prepared you are the more likely you are to feel in control, which will NATURALLY help your nervousness reduce.

STEP TWO
Practice, practice, practice. You can’t do too much practice. Don’t listen to those people who say you can over-practice. Tell that to circus artists who practice day in day out for decades, just to get their act right. You don’t hear actors and musicians complaining they had ‘too much’ rehearsal time. The more your rehearse, the better.

STEP THREE
Say your speech OUT LOUD. Whether you are in the car, the bath, or going for a walk with the dog, say it out loud. Going through your talk ‘in your head’ means you don’t benefit from something called ‘psychomotor memory’ – whereby the memory for what you need to say is partly embedded in the muscles of your mouth.

STEP FOUR
Get to the venue early. Get a feel for the room. Sit where the audience will sit so you can see it from their perspective. Walk around the auditorium. Practice your speech on the stage itself. The more comfortable you are with the room, the less your nerves will be.

STEP FIVE
Get some exercise. A walk, a swim, a session in the gym, it doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you get some exercise in the couple of hours before your talk. That way you’ll change the chemistry of your blood supply in your own favour. Exercise is essential in reducing nerves. Do not skimp on this.

STEP SIX
Chew some mints or sweets. While waiting to go on stage, chew something. This will produce saliva which also helps reduce nerves. If you drink water your saliva production will go down and your nervousness will rise. Avoid water when presenting.

STEP SEVEN
When you go up on stage, smile. No matter how false it feels to you, the audience won’t notice. Just smile. It helps produce hormones that lead to a more relaxed feeling.

STEP EIGHT
Be active on the stage. Move around, use big gestures and get as much body movement as you can. The more you move the more relaxed you will feel.

STEP NINE
Look people in the eye. Make as much eye contact as you can. The more the better. Eye contact is essential in helping you feel good and reducing your nerves.

STEP TEN
Use feedback. Always gain feedback on your speeches. You’ll soon discover you are a lot better than you think you are, which is bound to help boost your confidence.

Discover Success Coaching to Gain Fantastic Results
Thursday 23 October 2008 @ 8:15 am

Personal coaching is a therapy that has become increasingly used over the last nine years. The term lifestyle coaching first became trendy in the United States of America where, together with Neuro Linguistic Programming, it became part of an improved outstanding wave of astonishingly proactive therapy models.

In many ways both Coaching and Neuro Linguistic Programming are an answer against certain aspects of the Humanistic movement, in particular Person-Centred Counselling. A criticism of the humanistic therapy approach is that it is profoundly reactive and not astonishingly proactive. Although all that works good with some clients, with others long periods of impasse or low return for time and effort occur. Coaching and Neuro Linguistic Programming are both humanistic therapy in stance, spending effort on improving a person?s well-being rather than looking into the depths of childhood, as in traditional psychology. Life coachings emphasis is, however, deliberately proactive and their to resolve your problems.

Life coaching is not about preaching to the coaching client what to do. This is a common misconception. Some lifestyle coaches are fairly successful in their business careers and then make the change to performance coaching, assuming that they will only be required to divulge their pearls of awesome wisdom with the lifestyle coaching client. This is more like mentoring a person in a specific environment. Performance coaching is instead about life as a holistic view. Change your life today with Life Coaching.

Relieft from Sarbanes-Oxley on the way?
Monday 20 October 2008 @ 7:50 pm

Do you have to fill out a day’s worth of paperwork to make the most inane of changes at work? If so, this article may be for you..

Bringing a large or small enterprise into compliance with the new Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) regulations is not cheap. However, perhaps it is more expensive than it needs to be. This may be due to over-reactions and misinterpretations of the regulations, as the CNET article suggests.

However, I would wager that another sizable portion of the unnecessary expense is Vendor’s exploiting Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt (FUD) about SOX to up-sell their products or services to CIO/CFO/CXO’s.

Good read to understand what is going on and what may change.
