3 Steps To Your First Small Business Website
Sunday 31 August 2008 @ 12:55 pm

When planning your first small business website,
there are three essential questions you should ask yourself:

  1. Who is your target audience?
  2. How will your target
    audience find you?
  3. How will you convert your visitors
    into sales?

These questions sound obvious, but it’s amazing how many
people don’t bother…and then moan that “our website doesn’t
bring us any business”.

1) Who is your target audience?

Give a great deal of thought to your target market. Who do you
want to attract to your website? Why? The answer to that is more
than likely to sell them something – a product, a service, or an
idea perhaps.

Claiming that your market is anyone and everyone is far too
vague, and your website will lack focus, and fail to maximise
its potential. Ideally you should be aiming to create a niche.

2) How will they find you?

Creating a niche will also help you with the search engines, and
drive hot leads to your site.

Consider what keywords your target market might type into a
search engine to find you. Actually do the searches yourself.
Who comes up in the top 30? Because that’s where you need to be.
Are your competitors there? Look at their sites. Do they work?
How can you improve on them? Identify something unique about
your business that sets it apart from the rest.

Those keywords – or keyphrases to be more accurate – need to be
incorporated into your pages of your site – in the page titles,
in the headings, and in the internal links. Be specific with
your keyphrases. They will be less competitive than the more
general single word searches, and will more accurately target
your market. You may have to localise or specialise to get in
that top 30 – and the top 30 is where you need to be to drive
traffic to your site. As I am sure you are aware from your own
experience, if you haven’t found what you are looking for in the
first 3 results pages, you look elsewhere.

The key to achieving high search engine
rankings is building inbound links to your web pages – that
is pages on external websites that link to pages on your site.
Crucially this link acquisition should be a natural growth -
where inbound link count increases at a gradual pace. The pages
that link to yours should be relevant, on-topic and ideally
contain the same keywords – especially in the linking text.
Search engines rank pages based upon their reputation – your
ranking will be determined by what other (preferably high
ranking) pages say about your page.

3) How will you convert your visitors into sales?

Don’t just tell them what you do or sell. Tell them why they
want it (yes, want – not need). Offer incentives, freebies,
discounts – anything to get that dialogue started.

Current research indicates that the human brain makes a judgment
about a web page within a twentieth of a second! That doesn’t
leave you very long to make an impression. So, make sure that
you have your Unique Selling Point (USP) clearly visible on your
home page – and preferably prominent on every one of your other
pages. After all, it’s not a given that the home page will be
the first page that the visitor sees, particularly if they have
found you via a search engine.

Then make sure that you list your bullet-pointed guarantees.
Visitors have to understand why you are different from the rest,
and why they should deal with you and not your competitors. And
as we’ve discovered, they have to understand this pretty much
instantly.

Lastly, make sure that your site has a funnel-like structure.
Identify your important pages – usually the “call to action” or
purchase pages – and make sure all roads lead to those pages.
Your internal links – like their external equivalents – should
describe the target page. If you sell blue widgets, don’t call
your products page “Products”, call it “blue widgets”, and make
sure that the links pointing at this page also say “blue
widgets”. This will not only help the search engines identify
and rank the most important pages in your site, it will also
lead your visitor to that all important conversion.

Recover From Holiday Flirtations Without Destroying Your Marriage
Thursday 28 August 2008 @ 12:57 pm

“It seemed like a good idea at the time. I was just having fun and the mood was filled with expectation. We were dancing, then touching. Surely a little kissing wasn’t wrong.”

What one person will accept in their partner’s behaviour can be very different than another. The important issue for a couple is that they have clearly agreed upon expectations of the limits they will accept.

Falling in love is a wonderful feeling. It is very different than being overcome with lust. The feelings that rage into a frenzy with sexual arousal are more about a physical response and desire for conquest than love.

Once the arousal has cooled it is easy to say; “That didn’t mean anything to me.”

The partner who feels annoyed, jealous or rejected by their partner’s behaviour doesn’t want to accept that the obvious display of attraction was meaningless. They feel embarrassed, cheated and eventually lied to. What they observed did not look like something harmless or meaningless. It appears more like a direct threat to their relationship.

Resolving the feelings that watching a partner flirting and making sexualized contact with another person is challenging. Intense conflicts often follow holiday parties. It is important to work through these emotions without destroying the trust of your spouse. Getting the issue resolved helps avoid building resentment that can ruin a relationship.

Rather than staying in the blame stage of a relationship, move on to the learning phase.

Before going to the next gathering the couple needs to agree on issues like:

1. If dancing with someone other than their partner is acceptable?

2. Is being naked in the hot tub tolerated?

3. Will group sexual activity be an expectation of this party?

4. Is pressure of coercion used that takes them beyond their comfort level?

5. Are drugs and alcohol acceptable? If so, which ones and how much.

6. Do they agree to leave together?

7. What action will be taken if the other strays from the agreement while partying?

Celebrating important events with others is part of life. Having group fun helps build a long term lifestyle. Building relationships with people with similar values and expectations helps couples wake up after the partying is over able to talk about the fun and feel good about themselves and their relationship.

Domain Names More Choices than You Think
Saturday 23 August 2008 @ 4:47 pm

When you are choosing a domain name you will probably be looking for a .com or maybe a .net. This on the whole is sensible advice, but if you are offering something a little bit different on your website and you want to stand out then there is another path you can take.

First let me give a quick and simple explanation of the different parts that domain names are made up of. Let us start with the top level, this is the end part of any web address such as .com or the myriad of other top level names that are now available. The part next to the top level domain is called the second level domain. The second level domain is the part that you register with a domain name registrar. For my site the second level domain is NameSearchDomain.

The part at the from of the web address is the third level domain, this is excluding the www part. The third level domain is often referred to by your web host as the sub-domain, it is just a sub-domain of the second level domain name. You can set this part up with your web host if it allows you to use sub-domains.

This is a very high level overview of how a web address is made up, there is more to this but for our purposes this is all we nee to know. To clarify here is an example using Google.

You do not need to enter the www part of the address in your browser, just typing in Google.com will take you to the website.

Now you know how a web address is made up you can use your imagination to come up with a clever and distinctive web address. If you take a look at del.icio.us you can see an interesting use of the available domain names to spell the word delicious. Here they have registered the domain name icio.us, the us part is the top level domain that represents North America. A sub-domain of del has been created on their web server which completes the creation of a catchy web address.

Why not use the same principal to create your own web address, there are many top level domains to choose from, far too many to list here. As many of the less well known top level domains are not used there will be a lot more domain names to choose from. You can use this method to create a distinctive web address and become more memorable to your visitors.

Diabetes Awareness: Will They Recognize You?
Thursday 21 August 2008 @ 6:57 am

Imagine how it feels to look younger, feel younger, and act younger! Now, think about how others see you. Are you ready to make a lasting impression on your friends and family? Great!

Taking charge of your diabetes through exercise can give you a younger look and feel not to mention …… a younger attitude!

As you read this message, remember this: You don’t pay the price to improve your health, you reap the benefits of being healthy!

Treatment of diabetes has gone through dramatic changes in the past two decades. Previously, exercise was often overlooked as a “cornerstone” in its treatment as it was difficult to maintain blood sugar levels with the additional variability introduced by physical activity, especially for individuals with type 1 diabetes.

However, with blood glucose meters now being readily available and affordable, exercise can be done safely and without fear of severely upsetting an often delicate glucose balance.

The usual health benefits of exercise apply to individuals with diabetes as well, perhaps even more than normal.

Much of what we attribute to the aging process really results from disuse (for example, muscle atrophy, or loss of flexibility in joints). Diabetes, especially when blood sugars are poorly controlled, accelerates the normal aging process, as well as certain disease processes such as heart disease.

Thus, regular exercise can help slow aging and reduce long term complications associated with poor blood sugar control and diabetes.

These diabetes-related benefits can not be understated! Not only can you enjoy your favorite physical activity, but also you can help your diabetes and health too. In fact, regular exercise is the most important activity you can do to slow the aging process, manage your blood sugars, and reduce your risk of diabetic complications.

Ask your doctor about diabetes and have your blood sugar checked several times a year.

Renewable Energy Financing
Wednesday 20 August 2008 @ 9:17 am

There’s no doubt in my mind that a renewable energy source will have to, at some point in our existence, become our mainstream source of energy. Currently, the world in which we live is completely dependent on fossil fuels, specifically oil, to create the energy that runs our modern world sufficiently. Businesses and companies all over are realizing we will.

I came across this website, www.h2funding.com, which isn’t completely finished yet but brings up some great points and is definitely on the right path. In order for major companies to be able to switch to a great source of renewable energy, they are going to need some serious “green” funding. The good part about switching to renewable energy is that there is usually a high return on investment, so the systems will pay themselves off over a few short years.

From wind energy financing, solar financing, geothermal funding, and more; if you are interested in taking out a lease to pursue green technologies make sure to check out H2 Funding. This is obviously a company on the cutting edge of renewable energy financing. Their green energy financing programs will be able to help you turn your home or office into a more eco-friendly and cost effective place.

Hollywood’s Influence on the Masses
Sunday 17 August 2008 @ 11:44 pm

They say life imitates art but Hollywood, recently it might be more appropriate to say Art imitates life. I can remember when i was a kid pretending to be Superman, running around with a blanket flowing behind me or Luke Skywalker wielding my light saber. In either case, I was the good guy battling evil, lost in the world I watched before me.

Other an pop culture references, like advertising Coke in a film or ribbing the current star, films rarely delved into current political issues. Hollywood’s main foray into political issues were always based on dead presidents or fictitious political/legal dramas. It seems now that Hollywood is not satisfied with entertaining me, now they want to educate me, influence me. It is, of course, no secret that Hollywood attempts to, with great effect, manipulate us. They do so with a brilliant John Williams score or phenomenal scenery. They show us what we want to see: the good guys winning and the bad guys losing. They play to our emotions, which is exactly why we go to the movies. (at least it is for me) We, as an audience, fall for this willingly. We succumb to it like we do sleep after a 12 hour road trip with 2 kids.

Hollywood’s is no longer taking us to places we have never been or dare to dream to go to. The movie theater is no longer a safe have for the realities of everyday life. Studios now see fit to insert their own political views in films and Box Office receipts reflect the trend. Revenues for 2005 are down a estimated 7.5% behind 2004’s revenues of 24.1 billion dollars, which includes DVD sales and rentals.

With such a decrease in revenues, bank executives are seeking answers. The first person a banker goes after is one that seems to have no concern for money, the Artist. The executive’s accuse the artist of not being creative enough, even though this year has seen far less sequels than in previous years. Lack of creativity in Hollywood does seem to be a reasonable answer… what other reason would there be to replace the imaginary with the newsworthy.

It’s simple… Hollywood thinks that we are stupid, the movie-going and DVD-buying public that is. According to them, we have no more political sense for policies and quagmires than the Iraqis have for freedom and democracy. Susan Sarandon let us know how stupid we were before we went to Iraq. Since then many celebrities have used their popularity status and creative mediums to help the wold populations make informed decisions. Some have even visited foreign dictators in hopes that they might talk some sense into them that 13 UN Resolutions, sanctions, etc could not.

What recourse does someone have, without the resources or outlets of the Hollywood elite, to disagree ? The simplest way is avoid the endorsement of an idea in Hollywood is not paying for it. Audiences, are showing their discontent with op-eds in their escapist entertainment by not supporting them. DVD sales have even suffered with lack of growth in the market that was supposed to explode.

In the 30’s during the depression when film was in its infancy, the escape that a movie offered is what singularly defined cinema as the outlet of choice for Americans. Film became the mainstay because it reminded them of that was good in life and that it would be again. Hollywood put your hopes and dreams on the big screen so that regular people would feel good about themselves and be able to get through this hardship.

Now, the creative forces that is Hollywood are chipping away at the very things that mad film so successful. Making money on hops and ideals as well as happy endings is just simply not enough for them. Selling us opinions is increasingly more appealing. One only needs to look at television viewership of the major networks and newspaper circulation which share the same problem: lack of paying customers. Whatever political persuasion makes up an audience, less are seeking Hollywood as an outlet that can no longer be relied upon.

“Bodybuilding Sins” That Cause Back Pain and Missed Workouts
Friday 15 August 2008 @ 3:51 pm

It’s one thing for someone who sits at a computer all day and never exercises to have back pain, but for a bodybuilder, someone who spends hours and hours each week pouring everything they’ve got into building muscle, it should be criminal!

The reason we say this is because, if you are going to spend so much time, money, and energy trying to build the “perfect body”, you have to make sure that you not only look good, but also feel good…

We’ve identified what we call “Bodybuilding Sins” that lead to back pain, sciatic pain, and other injuries… read em and take action now if you are serious about bodybuilding and are fed up with your back pain.

Because there is so much information to share with you, we’ve broken it down into a series of 5 articles, each covering a different component of how back pain affects bodybuilders.

Here’s a breakdown of the articles to look for:

1. Article #1 – Choosing The WRONG Exercises (below)
2. Article #2 – Training Variations for Pain Relief and Maximum Results
3. Article #3 – Targeted Stretching
4. Article #4 – Targeted Exercises
5. Article #5 – Rest, Recovery, and Injury Prevention

Article #1 – Choosing the WRONG Exercises

Get ready, this is gonna hurt! The exercises most bodybuilders focus on the most, are the ones that cause the most problems… hopefully, you’re different J

But before we share with you what those exercise are, let’s talk real quickly about what bodybuilding is…

The goal of bodybuilding isn’t to get as big as you can, or at least to us it isn’t and shouldn’t be, but to build a balanced body that is as strong as possible in every way. For example, while being freakishly big may get people’s attention, it serves you no purpose at all…

while on the other hand, what if you were not only big, but also extremely strong and powerful, lightning fast, flexible, and agile enough to kick ass if needed?

So many bodybuilders build massive amounts of muscle yet are so unbelievably weak and inflexible… for example, we know a guy who can bench press over 350 lbs but can’t do a measly 50 push-ups!

The point is, the exercises you choose and how you perform them not only determine how big, strong, and flexible you are, but also affect how your body functions and whether or not you suffer from aches, pains, and injuries like back pain and sciatic pain.

Ok, here they are… the exercises that create the most problems and are most likely to lead to back pain:

1. Bench Press
2. Leg Extension

So, any of your favorites on this list?

While there are others, these are the two that cause the most damage.

There are several reasons why these exercises made our list of the “worst bodybuilding exercises”. First, all of them target areas that already tend to get worked a lot in everyday life and often times are overdeveloped…

and by focusing so much on these exercises you end up creating muscle imbalances, or worsening existing muscle imbalances, which pull your bones and joints out of their normal position…

and this leads to uneven pressure and wear and tear on your muscle, ligaments, tendons, bones, and joints and will sooner or later lead a break down or injury.

For example, chronic overuse of the bench press, coupled with little or no exercises targeting the upper back, leads to an overdevelopment of the chest and a lack of strength and development in the upper back…

This all too common combination leads to what we call “Turtle Back”. You know what we’re talking about, when the shoulders are pulled so far forward, lats are as wide as barn, and from behind, their back looks like a giant sea turtle shell!

This “Turtle Back” posture can create neck, upper back, and shoulder pain and injuries faster than you can pop an Advil!

Plus, how many times during your day are you forced to lie on your back and push up a bar loaded with weights? There are so many better exercises for chest development that not only stimulate more muscle, but also build more usable strength.

Now let’s talk about the fabulous thigh builder, the leg extension…

Not only does it place an unbelievable amount of strain on the knee joint, but it also will quickly overdevelop the quads, which are already getting far more work than their counterpart, the hamstrings.

An imbalance between the quadriceps and hamstrings, which is also extremely common in bodybuilders, is a key contributor to back pain. This imbalance is easily identifiable by what people often call “Bubble Butt” or “Ghetto Booty”.

So hopefully you can see how important it is to choose your exercises wisely. We strongly recommend you cut out these exercises, or at least cut back on using them and add in targeted exercises for the opposing muscle groups and targeted stretches for those tight, overdeveloped muscles.

The key to eliminating back pain, or any other ache, pain or injury for that matter, is to bring your body closer to balance…

What good is muscle if you can’t use it? How many more workouts are you going to miss because of back, neck, or shoulder pain? How much bigger and stronger could you be if back pain and other injuries weren’t ruining your training?

Just imagine how bad things will be 10, 20, or 30 years from now if you don’t make changes to your training now… but don’t take our word for it, ask some of the older bodybuilders who are paying the price now… you can spot them easily at the gym because they limp around trying to find something they CAN do.

Look for the next article, “Training Variations for Pain Relief and Maximum Results” very soon and in the mean time, if you are suffering from back pain or sciatic pain, here’s what you need to do…

Head on over to our website http://www.losethebackpain.com now to find out exactly what’s causing your back pain and the specific steps you need to take to get relief fast and get back to training at 100%.

Should You Hire a Landscape Designer?
Sunday 10 August 2008 @ 10:59 pm

Gardening isn’t one of my talents. I’m Mrs. Blackthumb and every plant I touch dies immediately or goes into shock and dies slowly. So when we moved into our present home, which was devoid of landscaping, I hired a landscape designer. The designer asked some important questions.

His first question was “How do you want the garden to look?” I had never thought about this. “I want the garden to look like a children’s book illustration,” I answered. “I want an old-fashioned garden filled with flowers.”

“What colors do you like?” the designer asked. “Well, the house is pale gray,” I said, “I would like flowers that go with with that color.” We walked around the small yard as we talked. Our conversation and site visit were all the designer needed. He drew up a plan, I approved it, and several weeks later two trucks pulled up in front of the house.

A mother and her children interrupted their walk to watch the landscaping “show.” Planting the shrubs and flowers took an entire day. The flower beds were outlined, the plants were positioned, and then set into the ground. By sunset, the yard was totally transformed. There is always something blooming in the garden.

We have hydrangea, hosta, some type of geranium (I don’t remember the name) and succulents. The Dianthus along the front steps are the first plants to come up in the spring. Wispy gray-green stems appear first and they blossom into a riot of pink. I love the Nearly Wild roses (that is their name) by the bottom step. These hardy roses are charming and really look nearly wild.

Darker pink chrysanthemums bloom in the fall and the flame bushes by the front door provide a final touch of color before winter comes. The garden was planted 12 years ago and we have not changed anything. Oh, there was a scruffy pine tree in the back yard when we arrived and it developed some sort of blight. We replaced this tree with a flowering apple called Spring Snow.

Should you hire a landscape designer? Yes! First, the designer had the vision to turn my hazy description of a garden into reality. Second, he knew which plants were deer resistant (herds gallop through the back yard) and which plants could survive a Minnesota winter. Third, most nurseries guarantee their plants for two years and we have taken advantage of this guarantee.

When people ask where I live and I give them directions they say, “Oh, you’re the house with all the flowers.” And more flowers have been added. The designer left space for bedding plants and each year I plant something different: purple petunias, yellow and purple pansies, striped violas, or red geraniums. Cars slow down – even stop – to look at the flowers.

I may be Mrs. Blackthumb, but I love my garden. In the long run, hiring a landscape designer saved me money. He planned the garden to fit the house, chose plants for my geographic zone, and gave me a garden that changed with the seasons. A landscape designer can do the same for you.
